Just as a clarification, you and the person who said that the Americans made the word "soccer" are both wrong. It was actually invented by the English.
British slang took the word "socca" from "ASSOCiation football". Then "socca" turned into the word "soccer". I agree with football being the proper name, but I use soccer to describe the North American game/style & socca as slag along with footy.
I'm not trying to get angry at you or anyone else who said those things, I just want to make sure if you're going to blame someone, get all the facts strait and blame the right people :)

i never said soccer was incorrect. i’m canadian, i call it soccer haha. maybe what that person meant was that the americans ‘adopted’ the word rather than created it.
